Does Saraswati bring good grades in exams?

Almost all the schools in Nepal celebrate Saraswati Puja festival. Although the teachers are pretty excited to celebrate the festival, the little children, specially in lower grades are not aware of the reason the festival celebrated. Some don’t event know who Saraswati is. Some of them, who knew Saraswati was a goddess, thought worshiping the goddess would bring us good grades in the exams.

Children are told to worship all their books, notebooks, pens and pencils with the Goddess Saraswati. When you worship everything in your backpack, one thing was a no-brainer – there would be no homework and plenty of fund time at the school. So, it is a goddess who would bring fun to the otherwise boring school. Music and celebration, and chanting of the prayer that nobody understood. Even some of the teachers learnt the prayer by heart and don’t understand what it meant.

Saraswati image or idol is that of a beautiful woman dressed in white saree, sitting on a white lotus. Holding a musical instruent veena, in her hands, Saraswati is clad in white themed background featuring white swan and white flowers. The lotus and whiteness symbolize light, knowledge, insight, wisdom and truth.

The goddess wouldn’t help you if you don’t study. The Saraswati Puja festival is the celebration to pay homage to Goddess of education – a reminder that education is necessary.

It’s not only language, mathematics and science, she also represents sports and music education. In fact, she is the goddess of every types of education. The musical instrument in her hand symbolizes that diversity in knowledge a person needs to get into.

In addition to remind the children and parents of our tradition and celebration, it is also the reminding of the importance of education.

Kids should be made aware that Saraswati won’t help them get good grades. She won’t help them in doing their homework. People say, Saraswati only helps those who work hard. Studying hard helps in getting good grades. Worshiping the goddess is a mental relief for the children when they feel low in their work – at least there is somebody who knows they have been trying their best. Saraswati helps children not to give up when things don’t go as they wished for.
